Why we chose this stone

A stone over one and a half carats is already substantial, and pairing that size with a C6 grade — deep, proper cognac colour — makes this cushion cut a genuine standout. Large stones with this depth of colour were never common, even during Argyle's operating years, since sizeable rough and intense colour saturation rarely occurred together. The cushion's rounded corners and mixed facet pattern make the most of it here, letting the dark tone pool and shift across the stone's surface rather than sitting flat, so it reads as rich and alive rather than dense or muddy. It comes from the East Kimberley region of Western Australia, the source of every Argyle diamond mined before the pipe's closure ended that supply permanently.

At 1.57ct with a strong C6 tone, this is a genuine centrepiece stone — bold enough to command a setting on its own, with a level of depth and scale that very few remaining Argyle diamonds can match. With the mine now closed, a combination this large and this richly coloured is unlikely to be seen again.
