Spessartite is a manganese-rich member of the garnet family, named after the Spessart region of Germany, and this 2.64 ct loose stone is cut in a cushion shape with soft corners and a broad, open face. Like all garnets it is singly refractive, which gives it a clean, steady sparkle, and at around 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it suits a ring or pendant when set with sensible care. The generous size lets the cushion outline carry plenty of presence, whether it is set alone as a solitaire or framed by smaller stones in a custom design. Spessartite is a favourite among collectors who prefer gemstones with a distinct identity over the more familiar choices.
