Spinel ranks 8 on the Mohs scale, so it is durable enough for everyday wear in a ring or pendant, and it is naturally singly refractive, which gives a clean, lively sparkle. It was long mistaken for ruby in historic royal collections, and today collectors prize it as a rare gemstone in its own right.
